To be there for the Opening Night of a great Russian classical ballet production, danced by some of the world’s finest ballet stars, is a memorable occasion—one to celebrate in style. And when it is an iconic, classical production of the supreme Russian ballet 'Swan Lake', danced by the internationally acclaimed St Petersburg Ballet Theatre, starring their world-famous prima ballerina opposite an acclaimed guest star from the Bolshoi Ballet, performed to the enchanting music of Tchaikovsky, the evening will be a visual and musical feast.
This acclaimed Russian company will perform the ballet masterpiece as it was meant to be seen, boasting gorgeous costumes, traditionally painted backdrops, and Tchaikovsky’s moving score played by the full orchestra of the English National Opera. And as to the stars, this ballet will be a showcase for the renowned prima ballerina Irina Kolesnikova—described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘truly a thing of remarkable beauty and technically flawless’—and the principal dancer from the Bolshoi Ballet, Denis Rodkin, hailed by the Guardian as ‘sensational’. The evening promises to be a fabulous celebration of classical Russian ballet and music at its best.
Furthermore, the company dances a different version of this hallowed ballet to the norm—the Konstantin Sergeyev. This is, in so many ways, the most St Petersburgian vision of the ballet. The production’s choreographic structure—the airy symmetry of the corps' patterns, the broad dimension of the dance, its glorious litany of national styles and its joy—is one in which the dancing dominates, whittling down the mime, creating a proud and poetic imperative which both proclaims and tests a company’s pedigree.
To make sure our Members do not miss this stunning, must-be-there performance, we have pre-booked best seats in the centre of the Dress Circle, allowing you to take in the full panorama of this glorious performance. The date is Wednesday, August 22, and to make sure we enjoy the occasion to the full we have also arranged a delicious pre-theatre three-course Champagne Dinner for our Members at the elegant five-star Savoy Hotel.
Due to our Club arrangement with the London Coliseum, for our Members the whole evening, including Champagne Dinner, is just £129 instead of the full £152 or more.
Irina Kolesnikova as Odette-Odile is a unusual, beautiful and poetic ballerina. She makes us feel Odette's heavy sorrow. As Odile, she is glitteringly sensual, charming critics and colleagues alike. A splendidly statuesque dancer with gorgeous fluidity of arms and back, plus dazzling technique (her 32 fouettés are bang on the spot), she dominates the stage—her performance alone is something to be seen. 'I was enthralled by Kolesnikova,' writes critic James Pritchard. 'When she dances Odette, time seems to stand still, all the steps are carried out with deliberation and perfect phrasing and she is all eloquent arms and high leg extensions. Odile is faster and flashier with those infamous fouettés, faultless and spot-on. Particularly impressive is Kolesnikova’s dramatic interpretation—I am won over by her eyes, which reveal the horror of Odette’s plight when she encounters Siegfried for the very first time. She believes she is Odette, and so do I. Her Odile is equally convincing: beguilingly sexy, thoroughly ruthless and with a maniacal (silent) laugh.'
The world famous Bolshoi Ballet superstar Denis Rodkin is the Prince—and this wonderful international ballet supremo is as technically excellent as it is possible to be. He is, writes the Guardian ballet critic, 'sensational, flinging high jumps into the air as if carving them with a knife, making the most incredible feats look easy. His wry charm illuminates the part and the stage.' Critic Neil Norman writes, 'Rodkin is magnetic. He leaps like a cat, without effort. He is a perfect partner for Kolesnikova, especially in their pas de deux as she folds in his arms like melting wax.'
Everywhere one looks, there will be delights to behold (and to hear), from the sumptuous designs, to the iconic Konstantin Sergeyev choreography, Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful score, and from the richly augmented corps de ballet to the innumerable stunning solos and pas des deux. The full Orchestra of the English National Opera will perform.
