Stay in a palatial 15th century Italian villa designed by the great Renaissance artist himself for the powerful Machiavelli family, with frescoes on the walls, antiques in the halls, fine wines and a view of Florence to thrill the soul
Set on a hillside overlooking Florence, the Villa Mangiacane is a stunning piece of Tuscan heritage, designed by Michelangelo for the Machiavelli family in the 1400s. This historic, romantic and glorious villa provides a grand Tuscan country residence with easy access to one of the world’s great cultural capitals: 15 minutes’ drive gets you to Florence, and, even better, 15 minutes’ drive brings you back to Villa Mangiacane at the end of the day. And now our Members enjoy privileged access and rates to stay in what could be termed a fragment of the Renaissance itself. It is one thing to look at such treasures, and quite another to stay in one.

Villa Mangiacane is an amazing building, bearing in its décor even now the unmistakable hand of Michelangelo. It has been painstakingly restored by its owner, a South African, from the original designs which are still kept in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. These are unlikely to include the more recent additions: swimming pools, 26 luxury rooms and suites, and spa facilities—so that now the Villa’s Renaissance atmosphere, its antiques and frescoes, all come with professional service and luxury-hotel must-haves including plasma TVs, Wifi and marble bathrooms. But when you stand on the verandah at nightfall, beneath the soaring arches, looking out over the Italian countryside at the lights of Florence, you cannot help but think of how so many Italian nobles, politicians and artists would have stood here by candlelight so many centuries ago, gazing on Florence as they intrigued and plotted and played their part in the creation of the art and wealth of their great city.
The Villa is at the heart of a large estate, 600 acres of vineyards and olive groves, and now it is run in a relaxed manner—it is managed by the same international group responsible for Château Eze in the south of France—which allows guests an easy time, so that one feels more like the invited guest of a private villa owner than an hotel occupant, which is in keeping with the villa's history and style.
Take, for instance, the many options for dining and relaxation, allowing guests to choose to eat outdoors in the fragrant herb garden, or in the vaulted wine cellar, even within the olive groves or by the roaring fire in the villa kitchen, should you prefer a setting other than the main dining room (though this is a resplendent place in which to dine). And no matter where you choose, the executive chef keeps the cuisine—Tuscan, with a modern twist—in fine form. The Villa Mangiacane would be a spectacular venue in which to hold a large private dinner party, or a wedding, or an anniversary celebration.
The villa has five styles of suite and three classes of bedroom. All are exquisite—beautiful and original, decorated with antiques and art works and with excellent modern facilities—but for gracious living the suites in the main villa are exceptional. Some have private gardens with plunge pools, and the split-level suites have terraces with fabulous views of Florence.
You might enjoy the 75 sq metre Terrace Suite in the main villa, which has a private terrace which looks out on to Florence and the countryside. It contains a mezzanine-style bedroom with king-size bed and marble bathroom, a private living room and a private dining area both inside and outside on the secluded terrace, perfect for a romantic candlelit meal.
Guests requiring pampering can saunter along to the Nadushka Spa, which comes with indoor pool, steam and sauna, and a small fitness room. In summer, the outdoor pool in the villa gardens comes into its own, and you can relax here under a tented canopy, or out in the sunshine, at peace with the world.
when to go
The Villa Mangiacane is open seasonally, March-November. It is at its most beautiful in spring, early summer and autumn, when the weather is delightful and Florence is a little less crowded.
how to get there
The villa location makes it easy to reach from the UK—just 12 km south of Florence and 23 km from Florence Peretola Airport. Flights from London to Florence are usually no more than 2 hours.
