This high-class, high-goal tournament is sponsored by John Collins’s Talacrest, the leading classic Ferrari dealer, and finals day will blend plenty of high-goal polo with an array of sleek thoroughbred horsepower styled in Italy. The sport’s top players and their amazing ponies will return to deliver end-to-end action in a bid to win the Club’s newest trophy. Talacrest will parade their Ferraris, and the Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain will add their own favourite Ferraris, creating a unique display of several eras of the Italian marque on Smith’s Lawn. This will be a day of delights.
The date is Sunday, August 11, 2024, and we shall enjoy a full day of sporting action, with delightful wining and dining in Guards VIP Clubhouse Enclosure. The day’s menu includes a Laurent-Perrier Champagne Reception and a three-course lunch served with wines, created by the celebrated chef Richard Corrigan.
The Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup is a thrilling sporting occasion—it is also a new 22-goal tournament, played for the first time in 2021, named in honour of HM The King, who as HRH The Prince of Wales offered his personal support for this high-goal competition. The Club’s much missed Chairman, the late Brian Stein, said at the launch, ‘We are honoured to have the support of His Royal Highness with regard to this tournament. He played much of his polo, including the high-goal at Guards Polo Club, winning The Queen’s Cup in 1986, and it is wonderful that we can honour His Royal Highness in such an appropriate fashion.’
The tournament’s August dates ensure that the world’s top players can be there, and we shall enjoy a full day of thrilling top-class sport, including grandstand seats and wining and dining, tasting the new menus created by Richard Corrigan, this year’s celebrity chef at Guards.
Of all the world’s polo clubs, none is quite so prestigious and highly regarded as Guards, nor, it seems, quite so spacious and beautifully tended—this is, after all, ‘home club’ to the Royal Family, including HM The King and his son William, the present Prince of Wales. The tournament final will be a feast of sport and horsemanship—and a feast in its real sense. The chefs at Guards this season are from Richard Corrigan, founder of the celebrated London restaurants Bentleys Oyster Bar and Corrigans Mayfair, and lunch will be served with wine chosen by the sommelier to complement the menu and preceded by the splendid Laurent-Perrier Champagne Reception.
