The Viyella 80/20 shirts are here for the season, and the Pheasant check is the first of them. If a check is wanted, this is the one to buy. It looks right under a jacket, it is the classic country shirt, and it is part of British history.
Pheasant is the colour, not a print. A tweed check in the russet, bronze and olive of a cock pheasant, in the cloth Members already know.
What turned out to be the perfect winter shirt-weave of 80 per cent cotton and 20 per cent merino wool was trademarked by Viyella in 1894, the year London’s Tower Bridge opened. It is still made because it is still the finest winter shirt. Warm as soon as it is on, and better after a few seasons rather than worse.
Viyella was the first shirtmaker to blend fabrics, hence the trademark. For these warm-handle shirts they still use long-staple cotton with merino wool: a soft finish, durable, and warm. Classic fit, classic collar, chest pocket, two-button adjustable cuff. Collars from 15 to 19 inches, including the half sizes.

Viyella Classic Fit shirts are a more generous fit than most. Straighter at the side, with a pleat at the base of the back yoke so the shoulder can move.
The cloth was first woven in England in 1893 by William Hollins & Co, then a blend of 55 per cent wool and 45 per cent cotton. The first ready-made garments were shirts and nightgowns. The weave has since been modernised to 80/20, which is why it can be worn in town as well as at a shoot lunch.
