There is a particular pleasure in a South Sea pearl of this size. Lumina is a single strand of white cultured pearls, 14.0 to 18.0 millimetres, strung to 17 inches so that it rests elegantly at the base of the neck. The pearls are the gift of the silver-lipped oyster, Pinctada maxima, found in the warm waters of the South Seas. Over years the oyster lays down a deep nacre, and the colour—white, with a gentle silver overtone—comes from the shell itself.

The lustre is soft and satiny. The forms are baroque. Each pearl keeps a slight oval or irregularity, as a baroque pearl will, and the beauty of the strand lies in the harmony of colour and light rather than in perfect circles. It is a classic expression of the South Sea pearl, and one that has been admired for as long as these pearls have been worn.

The clasp is in keeping: a polished 14-carat white gold Uniclasp, 14 millimetres across, set with 39 round diamonds weighing 0.27 carats. It closes the strand with a modest gleam, and does not compete with it.

Lumina is of that family, and of its baroque expression. Near-round pearls are found in the same waters; so are drops and the softer irregularities known as baroque.

Here the forms are baroque. Each pearl retains a slight oval or irregularity, and the strand is resolved not by identical outlines but by a shared body colour and a continuous gleam.

At 14 to 18 millimetres they sit at the upper reach of the South Sea harvest, where size itself becomes part of the style.
