Château de Pitray ‘Les Prairies’ 2022 has been selected for The Wine Merchant Top 100 Wines 2026. From a longstanding family estate in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, just eight kilometres from Saint-Émilion, it is a particularly attractive expression of the celebrated 2022 vintage.
The vineyards lie on the clay-limestone plateau beyond Saint-Émilion. Under Jean de Boigne and consultant winemaker Nina Mitjavile, the estate has renewed its emphasis on quality, and the result is delicious. The wine is 75% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec, with generous black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, a suggestion of spice, supple tannins and a fresh, balanced finish.
The CountryClubuk Tasting Panel unanimously recommended the wine for the Cellar. Rib-eye steak would be a fine companion, as are game including pheasant, which the Club Panel enjoyed, and an aged Cheddar cheese.
Château de Pitray is one of the longstanding family estates of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, eight kilometres from Saint-Émilion, on the clay-limestone plateau that gives this part of Bordeaux its distinctive wines. Castillon has long offered an interesting alternative to the more celebrated appellations nearby: the vineyards share much of the same landscape, but the wines are often available at considerably more approachable prices.
The estate has been in the hands of the same family for generations. Under Jean de Boigne, working with consultant winemaker Nina Mitjavile, it has undergone a renewed focus on quality. Les Prairies is an expression of that work, a Bordeaux made for pleasure at the table.
The 2022 vintage was warm and dry, producing ripe, concentrated fruit across much of Bordeaux. Here the blend is 75% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. Merlot gives the wine its generous dark fruit and supple texture; Cabernet Franc brings aromatic interest and structure. The small proportion of Malbec completes the blend.
In the glass, there is black cherry, plum and blackberry, with a suggestion of black tea and gentle spice. The palate is rounded and silky, with polished tannins and enough freshness to keep the ripe fruit in balance. It is approachable now, yet has the substance to accompany a good dinner.
With roast pheasant and pancetta, the richness of the pancetta and the savoury flavour of the bird brought out the wine’s fruit beautifully, while its freshness kept the pairing lively. The Tasting Panel was unanimous in recommending it for the CountryClubuk Cellar. There was also agreement around the table that it would be excellent with steak and roast beef, particularly a rib-eye. Slow-cooked beef, other game dishes and mature hard cheeses would suit it equally well.
The wine has been selected for The Wine Merchant Top 100 Wines 2026. It is welcome recognition for an historic estate making an assured, thoroughly enjoyable Bordeaux in an excellent vintage.
