100 The Chesterfield Mayfair Charles Street, W1 The Chesterfield Mayfair is a su- perb hotel with as rich and illus- trious a heritage as any in the world. It is truly a hidden gem, and some awards have named it in the Top Ten London Hotels. It stands in prime position in May- fair’s Charles Street, south of Berkeley Square and Shepherd’s Market, north of Green Park and Piccadilly, and within easy reach of Buckingham Palace, West- minster and St James’s. All this —and for our Members advanta- geous Club rates together with complimentary room upgrades, full English breakfast, Wifi and a complimentary drink in the Ter- race Bar to welcome you. The Chesterfield is indeed a choice venue, with a fascinating history as well as a luxurious present. Among former resi- dents were that fierce old cava- lier Lord Berkeley of Stratton, supporter of Charles II in the Civil War, as well as the Earl of Tankerville, MP, cricketer and natural historian—and Major James Cunningham, one of a small but heroic band who, against all odds, managed to shut the outer gate of the farm- house at La Haye Saint in the Battle of Waterloo—thus prompting his wife to remark that he was ‘the first and last Cunningham ever to shut a door’. Among the procession of noblemen, soldiers and states- men were Lord Petersham, a Regency dandy, the Earl of Carnarvon and, in 1900, Sir William Harcourt, infamous as the Chancellor of the Exche- quer who introduced death du- ties into the British tax system. Not his finest hour, one suggests. In other regards the Chester- field Hotel is an oasis of good sense, classical elegance and lux- urious hospitality, from the im- peccable top-hatted doormen at its canopied entrance, through- out the stately leather, polished mahogany and silks of the large and airy foyer, living rooms, a fine restaurant, excellent bar and library, and on into the rich- ly appointed rooms and suites. The Chesterfield offers stylish discretion and bonhomie. It is ranked four star deluxe, but in our view is thoroughly five star. Club rates: Superior Double: CCUK £205 (RR £425).
