Cliveden House & Spa Taplow, Berkshire THE restaurant at celebrated Cliveden House, Grade One Listed and standing in its own rolling parkland estate overlooking the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, must rank among the most sensational of them all. Michelin-starred André Garrett’s sumptuous dining room, lined with por- traits and glinting chandeliers, is the perfect foil to the hotel’s upscale glamour. A table beside the tall French windows, and lunch or dinner à la Monsieur Garrett, are much to be desired. So too the complimentary glass of Champagne which will be served to welcome you and your guests. The cuisine is contemporary French and seasonally delicious: think locally stalked fallow veni- son with watercress, chestnuts and pickled blackberries; rack of Devon lamb with artichoke, sprouting broccoli and lavender, and a mighty beef Wellington. There’s an exceptional pudding menu of delights such as peanut butter parfait with toffee, chocolate and honeycomb, creamy rice pudding and marmalade, and Paris Brest. Service is gracious, the wine list spectacular. The menus include à la carte and set, featuring the delicious, daily-changing three-course Market Menu at £36 including VAT—and of course, your free glass of Champagne, valued at £17. ¶ See also Country Hotels feature and countryclubuk.com.
